Established in 1968, originally as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson was later expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a total of 30 days. These special days are celebrated to recognize all of the contributions and achievements of the Hispanic American community. This special month celebrates the history and culture of the American citizens whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
Every year Hispanic Heritage month begins on September 15th and ends on October 15th. Many wonder why this special occasion is split between two months and not dedicated to one special month. This is because the Hispanic Heritage month celebration once started off as Hispanic Heritage week! By beginning on the 15th, this special day recognizes the anniversaries of national independence for many Latin American countries like Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. All of these countries recognize September 15th as the day they were given independence. These dates were chosen to line up with the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence.
